Growth is not always about doing more: Why meaningful communication begins with truly knowing a business

In the agency world, growth is often measured by volume: more clients, more campaigns, more projects and more output. At Edge Communications, we have chosen a different measure. We have never wanted to become an agency that attracts hundreds of clients and rushes from one task to the next. Instead, we deliberately work with a smaller group of organisations that fit our values and approach. This allows us to understand each client’s organisation, audience, challenges and objectives, and to take responsibility for their full communication and marketing needs.

For most of our clients, we do not operate as an outside service provider waiting for the next brief. We become an extension of their team. We take part in the daily work of building their visibility, protecting their reputation, communicating with stakeholders and supporting business growth. We consider the complete communication environment: media relations, social media, websites, newsletters, campaigns, design, photography, video, messaging and internal communication. This hands-on approach has shaped Edge Communications over the past 10 years. It has also shaped how we have chosen to celebrate our anniversary.

The moment that started an idea

The campaign 10 Years. 10 Businesses. 10 Stories. did not begin in a formal planning session.

It began by noticing a new small business in our area. There was something about it that stayed with me. I could see that somebody had invested time, courage and resources into creating a livelihood. I also realised that the business probably needed help to become more visible, but that professional communication and marketing would understandably not be its most urgent expense. A new business must first pay for stock, equipment, rent, staff, licences and day-to-day operating costs. Marketing is often postponed until there is more money available. Unfortunately, customers cannot support a business they cannot find, understand or remember. In that moment, I felt God place a simple but important realisation in my heart: we already had the skills that could help. When I shared the idea with the team, every team member agreed to contribute extra time and make the necessary sacrifices to support 10 local businesses as part of our 10th birthday.

The campaign was born from gratitude for 10 years of blessing and grace from our Heavenly Father, but it was also born from a principle we have seen repeatedly in our work: communication is not an optional layer added once everything else is complete. It plays an important role in whether a good business gets noticed and has the opportunity to grow.

More than a once-off makeover

The campaign will give 10 selected local businesses practical communication and marketing support based on their individual needs. This may include a website, photography, video, design, social media guidance, messaging or media relations. However, the campaign is not simply about creating a logo, producing a few posts or giving each business the same standard package. Every business is different.

One may need better photographs so that customers can understand the quality of its products. Another may need help explaining its services clearly. A business with a strong community story may benefit from media exposure, while another may need a more professional online presence.

Good communication starts by identifying the real obstacle before selecting the tool. That is why our first responsibility will be to listen and create strategy. We want to visit the businesses, meet the people behind them, understand how they operate and identify where our skills can make the most practical difference. The process will also be documented through video, photography and written stories. The public will not only meet the selected businesses; they will be able to follow the journey and see what happens when communication becomes more focused, consistent and relevant.

The value of proximity

The campaign reflects what makes our agency model different. It is difficult to contribute meaningfully to a client’s growth when an agency only knows the latest task on the job list. To communicate effectively, the team must understand the organisation behind the task. This requires proximity. It means knowing what the client is trying to achieve, what pressures the organisation faces, how its audiences think and where opportunities may exist. It also means being willing to identify what is needed instead of waiting for the client to brief every action. Our team is involved in the detail because the detail influences the result. A media article cannot be separated from the organisation’s strategic message. A social media campaign should support broader business objectives. A website should not merely look attractive; it should guide audiences towards meaningful action. When communication services operate separately, businesses often receive fragmented outputs. The design may look good, the publicity may generate attention and the social media may remain active, but none of it necessarily moves in the same direction. An integrated approach creates alignment. It ensures that every platform, message and activity contribute to a clearer position and a stronger relationship with the audience.

Ten businesses, but a wider story

The direct support will reach 10 businesses, but we hope the campaign tells a much wider story. South Africa is filled with capable people building businesses with limited resources. Many do not lack commitment, skill or a valuable offering. They simply need help presenting what they do in a way that people can see, understand and trust. The campaign is therefore not only about what Edge Communications can give. It is also about drawing attention to the courage, effort and potential already present in local businesses. As we celebrate 10 years, we are reminded that growth is not always about taking on more. Sometimes growth comes from going deeper, becoming more intentional and using what is already in your hands to create value for someone else.

That is the thinking behind 10 Years. 10 Businesses. 10 Stories.

It is a celebration of where Edge Communications has come from, an expression of how we believe an agency should work, and an opportunity to help 10 deserving businesses become seen, heard and remembered.
